Arnaldo Maidana

Arnaldo Maidana began his martial arts journey at age 7, initially training in capoeira and taekwondo. His interest in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ignited after watching his older brother, an avid grappler, compete. In 2005, at 16 years old, Maidana officially started his BJJ training under Gilberto Gabas in Aracatuba, Brazil, establishing a strong technical foundation that would define his future competitive style.

Maidana quickly rose to prominence in the brown belt division, known for his aggressive, submission-oriented grappling style. He earned medals at prestigious tournaments, including the IBJJF World Championships (gi and no-gi) and the Brazilian Nationals. His dynamic and relentless approach led to notable submission victories over elite competitors such as Felipe Pena and Vitor Silvério, marking him as one of the most exciting talents of his generation.

In December 2013, Arnaldo Maidana received his black belt from longtime coach Gilberto Gabas. Shortly thereafter, Maidana relocated to the United States to pursue a professional career in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This move allowed him to immerse himself fully in the competitive American BJJ circuit, both as an elite competitor and dedicated instructor.

Maidana serves as the head instructor at Checkmat Northridge in Los Angeles, California. Under his leadership, the academy has cultivated a growing competition team recognized for its aggressive, submission-focused style. Maidana effectively balances coaching responsibilities with active competition, demonstrating his commitment to both teaching excellence and personal athletic achievement.

Arnaldo Maidana is renowned for his aggressive, submission-hunting approach. He consistently maintains a high submission rate, finishing well over half of his victories by submission, even when competing against heavier opponents. His relentless attacking style, characterized by constant pressure and precise technique, has proven highly effective against elite-level competitors, solidifying his reputation within the BJJ community.

Fight To Win Superfight Victory (2021)

In 2021, Maidana secured a significant victory at a high-profile Fight To Win superfight, defeating rising talent Fellipe Trovo via decision. The match showcased Maidana's tactical experience and strategic control against a younger opponent.

Dominant Performance at IBJJF American Nationals (2023)

In 2023, Maidana dominated the IBJJF American National (Master 1) championships, earning double gold by submitting all five opponents he faced. His performance highlighted his exceptional submission skills and tactical aggression.

Competing Among Elite at IBJJF World Championship (2023)

Demonstrating his willingness to challenge himself against the best, Maidana competed in the adult lightweight division at the 2023 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship. There, he faced elite competitors, including Kaynan Duarte, further underscoring his commitment to testing his skills at the highest level.
