Igor Silva

Igor Silva began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey in 1998 under the mentorship of Zé Mario 'Esfiha'. Initially driven by a desire to build muscle, Silva quickly discovered a deep passion for the martial art. After achieving his yellow belt, Silva continued his training under Muzio de Angelis, who assumed instructional duties following Roberto Traven's relocation to the United States. Silva's unwavering dedication culminated in 2006, when he received his black belt directly on the podium after securing gold at the IBJJF World Championship at brown belt level.

Widely regarded as one of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu's premier closed guard specialists, Igor Silva consistently employs this fundamental yet highly effective technique at elite competition levels. His closed guard is characterized by precise control, strategic grips, and relentless submission threats, enabling him to defeat numerous world-class opponents. Silva actively imparts his closed guard expertise to students, emphasizing core principles, tactical setups, and efficient submission sequences.

Based in Abu Dhabi, Igor Silva has coached and competed extensively in over 35 countries, significantly impacting the global Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community. In 2023 alone, Silva promoted three of his students to black belt, underscoring his effectiveness as an instructor. He remains deeply committed to teaching foundational techniques and specialized closed guard systems, contributing to the technical growth and competitive success of practitioners worldwide.

Igor Silva actively participates in the Marc Romano Project, a social initiative dedicated to empowering children and teenagers through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Through his involvement, Silva leverages the martial art as a powerful vehicle for positive social change, fostering discipline, confidence, and community engagement among youth.

In alignment with Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nahyan's vision to integrate Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu into the UAE's sporting culture, Igor Silva relocated to the United Arab Emirates. He quickly became a prominent competitor and medalist within the UAEJJF circuit. However, Silva publicly voiced concerns regarding biased refereeing practices within the organization. In protest, he chose to abstain from competing in UAEJJF events, advocating strongly for impartiality and fairness in officiating.

Resilience in the Face of Injury

In 2009, Igor Silva sustained a severe knee injury during competition. Demonstrating exceptional resilience and determination, he continued competing and remarkably secured victory in the final match despite the setback.

Ongoing Competitive Achievements

Silva's competitive drive remained undiminished, leading to consistent victories in subsequent years. Notably, he captured Master 1 super-heavyweight gold at an Abu Dhabi Grand Slam event in 2024. Silva continues to actively compete in Master divisions, showcasing enduring skill, tactical prowess, and dedication to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu excellence.
