Mark Zuckerberg

Mark Zuckerberg began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu around 2021, seeking a personal challenge beyond his high-tech career. Initially attracted to the sport's demanding blend of mental strategy and physical intensity, Zuckerberg quickly embraced the discipline and tactical depth inherent in grappling. To complement his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training, he incorporated mixed martial arts (MMA) into his regimen, even constructing an octagon-style training cage at his home to facilitate regular sparring and technical practice.

Zuckerberg trains at Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu in San Jose, California, under the guidance of Professor Dave Camarillo. A highly respected 5th-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Camarillo is renowned for coaching multiple UFC champions and has significantly influenced Zuckerberg's technical growth and strategic understanding of grappling. In July 2023, Zuckerberg reached a notable milestone when Camarillo promoted him to blue belt, officially recognizing his advancement within the Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu lineage.

Competition Performance

In May 2023, at age 39, Zuckerberg made his competitive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu debut at the BJJ Tour Silicon Valley tournament. Competing under the name Mark Eliott in the Masters (30+) featherweight division at 155 pounds, he demonstrated tactical composure and adaptability. In the no-gi division, Zuckerberg secured gold after a best-of-three series against the same opponent, winning two matches and losing one. In the gi division, he earned silver following a closely contested match involving an Ezekiel choke.

During a gi match at the May 2023 BJJ Tour Silicon Valley tournament, Zuckerberg found himself caught in an Ezekiel choke. The referee halted the match, believing Zuckerberg had lost consciousness. Zuckerberg politely disputed the stoppage, expressing initial confusion. After further review, officials amended the referee's decision to a 0-0 draw. The incident drew considerable media attention, highlighting Zuckerberg's competitive determination and resilience on the mats.

Zuckerberg openly discusses the personal benefits he gains from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, emphasizing its effectiveness in stress management and mental clarity.
