Ed O’Neill embarked on his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey in 1991 at the age of 45, introduced to the art by his friend, film director John Milius. He began training at Rorion Gracie's renowned academy in Torrance, California, during a pivotal period when Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was gaining recognition in the United States. Despite his athletic background in football and boxing, O’Neill was immediately humbled in his first session, as a smaller Gracie instructor effortlessly neutralized his strength using precise leverage and technical control. This eye-opening experience convinced O’Neill of BJJ's effectiveness, igniting a lifelong passion for the martial art.
