Lucas Leite

Lucas Leite was born on November 3, 1982, in Brazil. At age 12, he discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after watching a VHS tape of the inaugural Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where Royce Gracie demonstrated the effectiveness of jiu-jitsu against larger opponents. Initially training under the late Ryan Gracie, Lucas briefly stepped away from the mats during his teenage years, losing motivation for about a year. At 18, he returned to training, marking a pivotal moment that set the stage for his future competitive and coaching career.

After relocating with his family, Lucas joined the academy of renowned competitor and instructor Leonardo Vieira. Under Vieira's mentorship, Lucas reignited his passion for competition, ultimately earning his black belt. Vieira's guidance significantly influenced Lucas's decision to pursue Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu professionally, both as a competitor and instructor. This relationship led Lucas to become a central figure within the Checkmat BJJ organization.

Lucas Leite is internationally recognized for pioneering the "Coyote Half Guard," an innovative variation of the Half Guard specifically designed to enable smaller grapplers to effectively sweep larger opponents. This tactical approach emphasizes precise leverage, strategic positioning, and timing, making it widely studied and adopted globally. Lucas regularly shares his insights and detailed breakdowns of the Coyote Half Guard through seminars and instructional content worldwide.

Known for his exceptional half guard proficiency, Lucas Leite has successfully competed in both gi and no-gi formats. Remarkably, he often competed two weight classes above his natural division, showcasing the effectiveness of his technical approach against heavier opponents. His competitive accolades include multiple IBJJF No-Gi World Championship titles. Lucas actively encourages his students to compete across both gi and no-gi disciplines, emphasizing adaptability and technical versatility.

In 2007, Lucas Leite relocated from Brazil to Southern California, establishing a prominent Checkmat BJJ academy in the Inland Empire region. As head instructor, Lucas developed one of Checkmat's strongest U.S.-based competition teams, fostering talent and creating a hub for high-level training camps and athlete development.

Beyond his own competitive achievements, Lucas Leite has become a respected coach and mentor in both grappling and mixed martial arts. He notably coached rising BJJ star Elder Cruz, guiding him to an IBJJF No-Gi World Championship absolute title. Additionally, Lucas has trained MMA athletes, including UFC veteran Jessica Penne, refining their jiu-jitsu skills and demonstrating his broad influence beyond traditional gi competition.

Even as a full-time instructor, Lucas Leite maintains an active presence in competition. He has expressed interest in competing in Masters divisions and regularly conducts seminars at major Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu events, including the World Masters tournaments. His enduring competitive spirit, extensive experience, and dedication to teaching continue to inspire students and fellow instructors throughout the Checkmat network.
