Andre Galvao

Born on September 29, 1982, in São Sebastião, São Paulo, Brazil, André Galvão relocated during childhood to the Vale da Paraíba region. His martial arts journey began early with judo, providing him a solid foundation in grappling and combat sports. Galvão later transitioned to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, initially training under Luis Carlos Dagmar before advancing under the renowned instructor Fernando Tererê.

In 2002, Galvão moved to Rio de Janeiro to train under esteemed coach Osvaldo Alves. Under Alves' mentorship, Galvão rapidly progressed, capturing his first IBJJF World Championship title as a blue belt. He subsequently joined Fernando Tererê's team, where he dominated colored belt competitions, notably achieving double gold medals at both the IBJJF World Championship and the CBJJO World Cup. His aggressive guard passing, relentless pace, and technical precision distinguished him early as a future elite competitor.

In 2008, André Galvão co-founded Atos Jiu Jitsu, quickly establishing it as one of the most influential academies in modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. As head coach at Atos HQ in San Diego, Galvão has mentored numerous champions, notably teenage prodigies Tye Ruotolo and Kade Ruotolo, guiding their progression from promising blue and purple belts to ADCC and IBJJF gold medalists.

Galvão's competitive legacy is closely linked to his unprecedented dominance in ADCC superfights, holding the title continuously from 2011 to 2019. His reign culminated in a highly anticipated superfight against Gordon Ryan at 2022 ADCC World Championship. The match was preceded by significant tension, including a widely publicized backstage altercation in 2021, intensifying their rivalry. Although Galvão was ultimately defeated by Ryan, the event drew immense attention to ADCC. Following the match, Galvão graciously addressed his students, emphasizing the legacy he had built throughout his career.

Between 2008 and 2010, Galvão briefly competed in mixed martial arts, retiring with a professional record of 5-2-0. Choosing to focus exclusively on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, he declined further MMA opportunities to dedicate himself fully to coaching and developing Atos. Galvão co-authored the influential instructional book "Drill to Win," emphasizing structured drilling, conditioning, and a philosophy of continuous improvement.

Galvão is renowned for his rigorous drilling routines and structured training camps, notably the intensive ADCC preparation camps hosted at Atos HQ. In 2022, André Galvão was officially inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame, recognizing his extraordinary competitive career and significant contributions to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. During his induction, Galvão expressed gratitude toward the sport's legends, reflecting on his journey from a small town in São Paulo to achieving this prestigious honor. His induction highlighted his five IBJJF World titles and underscored his lasting impact on the sport.
