Joao Miyao
Early Life and Introduction to Jiu-Jitsu
João Miyao was born on May 11, 1991, in Andirá, Paraná, Brazil, alongside his twin brother Paulo Miyao. As third-generation Japanese descendants, the Miyao brothers grew up in humble circumstances, raised by their father, a farmer, and their mother, a housewife. Initially training in Judo, they discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at age 16 under instructor Adriano Carvalho. Recognizing their exceptional talent early on, Carvalho encouraged the brothers to compete frequently, laying the foundation for their future competitive success.
Development at Cicero Costha's PSLPB Project
Determined to pursue Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu professionally, João and Paulo relocated to São Paulo upon reaching adulthood, despite their parents' initial reservations. They joined Cicero Costha’s Projeto Social Lutando Pelo Bem (PSLPB), a renowned social project known for developing elite competitors. Living and training full-time at the academy, João adopted an intense training regimen, meticulously studying techniques popularized by the Mendes brothers, Rafael Mendes and Guilherme Mendes. João's innovative guard style, particularly his mastery of the berimbolo, quickly gained media attention as he consistently secured podium finishes in absolute divisions despite competing at just 64 kg.
Transition to Coaching and Studio 1908 Academy
After several years of training and competing under Unity Jiu-Jitsu in New York City, João and Paulo parted ways with the team in 2020 due to unresolved differences. In early 2024, the Miyao brothers opened their own academy, Studio 1908, in Jersey City, New Jersey. This marked their transition into gym ownership, enabling them to directly share their extensive technical knowledge and disciplined training methodologies. João actively instructs at Studio 1908, emphasizing detailed berimbolo techniques and the rigorous drilling practices that defined his competitive career. Additionally, João supported Paulo's transition into a coaching role at Dream Art in São Paulo, aligning with their shared vision of mentorship and technical excellence.
Competition Style and Technical Specialization
João Miyao is renowned for his highly technical and flexible guard game, particularly his specialization in the berimbolo. His obsessive drilling habits and meticulous, laboratory-like approach to technique refinement have established him as one of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu's most precise competitors. João has successfully competed in both gi and no-gi formats, demonstrating versatility and adaptability. Even after transitioning into coaching, he continued to compete selectively, maintaining elite-level performances. Notably, João secured gold in the Master 1 division at the 2022 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship (light-feather), and alongside Paulo, achieved podium placements at major adult events, including the 2021 IBJJF Pan Championship.
Legacy of Discipline and Influence
João Miyao's legacy is deeply rooted in his monastic dedication to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Early in his career, he famously drilled techniques for hours on end and even slept on gym floors, exemplifying unwavering commitment. Today, João instills this rigorous discipline and meticulous technical study in his students at Studio 1908. His calm, stoic demeanor and disciplined approach continue to inspire a new generation of grapplers. Widely recognized as a thoughtful innovator and influential figure, João Miyao remains a respected presence within the global Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community.
