Shane Jamil Hill-Taylor

Shane Jamil Hill-Taylor was born on December 8, 1995, in Suitland, Maryland, USA. From a young age, he displayed a natural affinity for sports, initially participating in football and taekwondo. At age 8, friends encouraged him to attend a summer camp at Team Lloyd Irvin, introducing him to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This early exposure ignited his passion for grappling, prompting him to begin competing in tournaments by 2005. He quickly embraced the competitive nature of the sport, laying the foundation for his future success.

In 2018, Shane Jamil Hill-Taylor etched his name into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu history by becoming the first African-American male to win an IBJJF Black Belt World Championship. Competing in the featherweight division at the 2018 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, he achieved this groundbreaking milestone while simultaneously managing rigorous academic responsibilities as a senior at Howard University. Later that same year, Hill-Taylor graduated from Howard, exemplifying a rare combination of academic excellence and elite athletic achievement.

Hill-Taylor is renowned for his innovative guard work and dynamic scrambling abilities, earning him the nickname "Bruxo" (wizard) from his Brazilian teammates. He popularized a highly effective lasso guard system, notable for its seamless transitions to back control and submission setups. He spent much of 2022 and 2023 away from the competitive scene. In 2024, he announced his return to high-level competition, headlining a super-fight at the 2024 IBJJF Absolute No-Gi Grand Prix. This marked his first major IBJJF appearance in several years, signaling his readiness to challenge a new generation of elite grapplers.

A product of Team Lloyd Irvin's esteemed youth program, Shane Jamil Hill-Taylor has come full circle, becoming one of the academy's leading black belts. Deeply committed to his home gym in Maryland, he actively mentors younger athletes transitioning from the kids' program into adult competition. Having been personally guided by coach Lloyd Irvin since childhood, Hill-Taylor now plays a pivotal role in developing the next generation of talent at the academy.
